Futuro XR: Emerging Latino Filmmakers Explore Immersive Storytelling

In May 2026, the Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival (LALIFF) showcased immersive storytelling for the first time through the Futuro XR: 360° Video Lab, a five-month fellowship created by the Latino Film Institute and supported by Agog: The Immersive Media Institute.

Led by mentor Alejandro Palacios, who designed the curriculum and implemented the program, the five-month fellowship focused on immersive storytelling production. Through workshops, mentorship, and hands-on production, emerging Latino filmmakers explored the possibilities of immersive storytelling and created four original virtual reality (VR) films that premiered at LALIFF. The showcase marked an important milestone for both the festival and the growing field of immersive media.
